Description

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a participant in the Hackathon. I wanted to use IPv6 for something I
am working on, but for some reason it seems that I can not obtain an
address. Yesterday it took it a bit of time (10-15s), but I managed to get
one. I am connected to `ietf` network. My MAC address is
`08:d4:0c:46:6e:50`. I can try to send you a pcap file if that will be of
any help. When I start dhclient (version `isc-dhclient-4.3.3`) manually, I
see

```
...
Listening on Socket/wlp1s0
Sending on   Socket/wlp1s0
PRC: Soliciting for leases (INIT).
XMT: Forming Solicit, 0 ms elapsed.
XMT:  X-- IA_NA 0c:46:6e:50
XMT:  | X-- Request rebind in +5400
XMT: Solicit on wlp1s0, interval 1050ms.
RCV: Advertise message on wlp1s0 from fe80::128:1.
RCV:  X-- Server ID: 00:01:00:01:21:1c:23:e8:aa:00:00:78:21:cd
IA_NA status code NoAddrsAvail: "No addresses available for this interface."
PRC: Lease failed to satisfy.
...
```

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Are RAs being received?

sudo tcpdump -i en0 -s 0 -n 'ip6[40] == 134'

Ivaylo,

It looks like you're attempting to use DHCPv6 to get an assigned address. The IETF network is designed for users to use SLAAC to self assign addresses based upon data received in the RAs. Additionally, for additional details like name servers and domain name, stateless DHCPv6 is provided.

Are you unable to use SLAAC?

Ivaylo,

Just as a followup, I've checked our RAs and the "O" bit (Other Data) is set, but the "M" (Managed) is not. Are you manually trying to force a DHCPv6 request to get an address?

If by manual you mean running the dhclient myself, then yes. I was running
`dhclient -6 -v wlp1s0` in order to try to understand what was going on.

My laptop was not getting a global address even after reconnecting, so I
decided to try `dhcp`...

Now I tried to disconnect and connect again and I see a Global address. I
don't know if my network manager was not obtaining a public IPv6 address
for some reason or some other issue prevented it from getting me one, but I
am happy that it is fine now :)

Thanks for the support and the information!
