#1412 assigned request

IPv6-only client and gather.town - impossible to connect audio/video with others, and vertical bar missing buttons

Description

Hi, tickets,

I would like to let you know that, despite being accessible on IPv6, the
gather.town environment does not work properly when my client is IPv6-only.

- when approaching a person on gather.town the little screen (normally
showing his/her image) it says "Connecting..." and then stays that way,
on a small black background.

- the vertical black bar on the left side, that normally dislays many
buttons like mute cameas, mute audio - only shows 2 buttons and the
'change character'.

These two errors do not happen when my client is on IPv4.

My web browser is firefox latest version (non ESR).

My OS is Windows 10 latest version.

The network interface is Ethernet, and I unchecked IPv4 in the interface
properties.  My computer has no IPv4 address.

The person that I tried to connect to on gather.town uses a computer
that is on IPv4, and might have some IPv6 features but he's not sure.

All other IPv6 browsing, e.g. www.ietf.org, works fine for me.

The screenshot shown below left is about the gather.town situation (note
the black video screen and the vertical bar missing the buttons).

The screenshot shown below right is about my network interface
properties (note the IPv4 uncheck box).

Alex

Alex,

Thank you for the report. gather.town is a new service, 3 to 5 months new. Originally gather had no plans to have IPv6. At our request the team at gather.town (whom had very little knowledge and no understanding or experience with IPv6) added IPv6 . This was only done the week prior to the meeting start.

Gather.town is an experiment for this meeting and thus far seems to be received well. Yes it has room for improvement, the gather.town team has made huge improvements over a few short weeks and is continuing to do more. We will get this report to gather.town.

Sean,

I suggest we downgrade gather.town.

It should have been written from ground up on IPv6, and with IPv4 being
that room for improvement, not vice-versa.

I think this is important.  Please escalate and do not close it.

Alex

I suggest we downgrade gather.town.

Can you explain downgrade?

It should have been written from ground up on IPv6, and with IPv4 being
that room for improvement, not vice-versa.

gather.town was not developed by the IETF and was an experiment for this virtual meeting.

I think this is important. Please escalate and do not close it.

Yes it is important and will be escalated to gather.town

Thank you for escalating this to gather.town.

"Downgrade" means to reduce its level of recommendation to IETF users.
Instead of recommending it, rather dis-recommend it to IETF users.

It's like downgrading the stock option value recommendation of some
actor in in the market.

When IPv6 gather.town works fine then maybe upgrade it back again, even
above the earlier levels.

github is another case in point.

Generally speaking, when bringing something on such a wide IETF scale,
it's good to make sure it works with IPv6 ok from the earliest stages.
Otherwise people develop habits, WGs start using it, and when we realize
that a key techno is unavailable it's generally too late.  But a
"downgrading" recommendation might work at that point.
