Description
In attempting to join the network today I noticed that while the ietf.1x network seemed to work fine I was unable to join the ietf-a.1x network. Looking at iwconfig output:
Oddities:
ietf-a.1x attempts:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"f2\x0D\xB71X\xA3Z%]\x05\x17X\xE9\xD4\xAB\xB2\
xCD\xC6\x9B\xB4T\x11\x0E\x82tA!=\xDC\x87"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=14 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
ietf.1x attempts:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:"ietf.1x"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 00:17:DF:AA:41:04
Bit Rate=24 Mb/s Tx-Power=14 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=52/70 Signal level=-58 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
clearly something got munged badly in the (and gets munged badly everytime today for -a.1x) in the ESSID interpretation.
(if I can get a phone/data sim I'll come to the noc and we can troubleshoot)

Chris,
Please do come down to the NOC. We continue to investigate the issue with Linux. I should be here all afternoon.
Chris.

This may be a linux kernel issue. I've found the following:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/545708
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/548992
There's a note early in the first one that suggests:
"I "solved" this by compiling the bleeding-edge compat-wireless drivers from wireless.kernel.org. Have a look at http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download for instructions."

No reports of this problem in Beijing. Closing.
see also ticket 183
and I'm using fedora 12/networkmanager portal-a in Berlin and I lose my connection
over and over. Lose v6 first, then total connection.
